$110.00

This vintage poster features the work of French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The 1881 painting Jeune mére was completed during the artist’s period of study in Naples. It shows a working class mother and child, and has been interpreted as a modern and secular Madonna and Child.

Renoir’s original painting is in the collection of the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania. The Art Gallery of Ontario exhibited 83 French masterpieces from the foundation’s collection in 1994 to a viewership of over half a million visitors over sixteen weeks. The exhibition, titled From Cézanne to Matisse: Great French Paintings from the Barnes Foundation marked a significant moment in the AGO’s history. With over 60% of attendees visiting from outside of the Toronto area, this exhibition put the AGO on the map and stimulated economic and cultural growth throughout the city.

What we love about it: the working class maternal subject and connection to Toronto history, the warmth of the carpet in Renoir’s painting, and how beautifully the frame compliments the composition. We could go on and on…
