Raven, Northwest Coast painting, c. 1970s
Veritá is excited to offer this gorgeous acrylic on board painting. This is a very interesting work of Northwest Coast art. The formline suggests that it is Haida, and the work dates from the 1970s.
The painting depicts Yáahl (raven), identifiable by the rounded beak, who is a central character in Northwest Coast mythologies. Frequently depicted as a mischievous trickster, the raven is ultimately a force for creativity, transformation, and good. Haida and other Northwest Coast artists frequently depict animals with faces in their tail feathers or joints, which can relate to the animal-human relationship. The motif can also relate to specific narratives like Raven Steals the Sun/Light, which is likely the story depicted in this painting.
What we love about it: the human figure painted into the raven’s tail feathers. We love how the raven’s talons also form the figure’s arms.
Provenance: purchased from a private, prominent Northwest Coast collector
Dimensions: 78.74 × 68.6 cm, 31” x 27”
This painting is unsigned. It is in good condition with some signs of wear appropriate to its age. It is offered unframed. Please note that detailed condition reports are available for all artworks on request.
